Born in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota in 1943 Butch Thompson stated taking piano lessons when he was six years old and went on to play clarinet in his high school band. While a student at the University of Minnesota in 1962 he joined the "Hall Brothers Jazz Band" of Minneapolis and in coming years enjoyed frequent visits to New Orleans where he learned from local musicians. After leading his own groups including the "New Orleans Jazz Originals" he gained widespread attention as the featured pianist on the National radio show "A Prairie Home Companion" between 1974 and 1986. Butch Thompson is also currently among few pianist in the World to possess the ability to play in the style of the legendary Jelly Roll Morton.
