Jungle Blues
Butch Thompson Trio
2008 West Coast Ragtime Festival
The "Butch Thompson Trio" perform at the "22nd Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival" in Sacramento, California on November 22nd 2008 with Butch Thompson piano, Marty Eggers bass, and Hal Smith drums.
The trio's selection "Jungle Blues" was composed by Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll' Morton a New Orleans legend who was also one of the very first jazz pianists. Jelly's style is not easily imitated. Here for instance it adheres to strict time keeping peppered with the occasional tremolo flourish.
If you've ever wondered why more pianists don't chose to cover Jelly Roll Morton's material the simple reason may very well be that they can't play it. Butch Thompson is among few in the World who can not only play the music but improvise as if he were Ferd Morton himself.
