Charlie Johnson

(November 21st 1891 - December 13th 1959)

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1891 Charlie Johnson grew to become a jazz pianist and leader of the house band at Small's Paradise a popular Harlem nightspot. This ensemble known as the "Paradise Ten" performed at the club for ten years beginning in 1925, but produced their final recordings in 1929. With personnel which varied from session to session the band's line up would include Jabbo Smith, Sidney DeParis, Thomas Morris, Benny Carter, & Benny Waters.
