American singing star and actress of the 1920's and 1930's Ruth Etting had over 60 hit recordings. Working in stage, radio, and film she became known as "America's Sweetheart of Song".
Ruth left her hometown David City, Nebraska at the age of seventeen to attend art school in Chicago. Once there she found employment designing costumes at a club Marigold Gardens where she became a chorus girl and eventually a featured vocalist. On July 12th 1922 she was married to gangster Martin 'Moe the Gimp' Snyder who became her manager. Her husband used his influence to book radio appearances and secure an exclusive recording contract for her with Columbia Records. She debuted on Broadway in the "Ziegfeld Follies of 1927".
