Scagmore Green
Richard M. Jones' Jazz Wizards
Feat. Preston Jackson
This recording with produced in Chicago on November 24th 1926 featuring Richard M. Jones director, Shirley Clay trumpet, Preston Jackson trombone, Artie Starks clarinet & alto sax, George Reynolds piano, and Armand 'Red' Brown or Lesley Corley banjo.
*"Scagmore Green" was composed by Preston Jackson.
This uplifting number serves as a show piece of sorts for the beautiful assembly work of trombonist Preston Jackson. It is also perhaps the only (if not one of very few) side(s) recorded by the "Jazz Wizards" that was not composed by the band's director and noted tune merchant Richard M. Jones.
The New Orleans born pianist held a strong presence in Chicago during the 1920's as did Preston Jackson playing with such bands as those of Tig Chambers, Eli Rice, Art Sims and Al Simone and also on record with "Bernie Young's Creole Jazz Band".
Interestingly enough although he was already a musician (presumably a cornetist) Jackson didn't adopt playing trombone until 1920 three years after he first arrived in The Windy City from his home town of New Orleans.
His teachers on the instrument were two of the very best Chicago had to offer at the time Roy Palmer and Honore Dutrey for whom he would later frequently sub for in King Oliver's Band. -This would explain his accelerated instrumental advancement.
