Pleasing Paul
Henry Red Allen & His New York Orchestra
The Luis Russell Orchestra Feat. Red Allen
This recording was made on September 24th 1929 in New York City featuring Henry "Red" Allen trumpet, J C Higginbotham trombone, Albert Nicholas clarinet, Charlie Holmes alto sax, Luis Russell piano, Will Johnson guitar, George "Pops" Foster bass, and Paul Barbarin drums.
*"Pleasin' Paul" was composed by Henry Allen and Paul Barbarin.
The "New York Orchestra" was actually the Luis Russell band fronted by Henry "Red" Allen. At the time of this recording the rising star trumpeter had recently arrived in New York after signing a recording contract with Victor. "Red" would remain a favorite featured soloist with Luis Russell's band up until 1932 when he left the group. The following year Red Allen enjoyed a short stint with Fletcher Henderson before going on to play as a member of Lucky Millinder's "Mills Blue Rhythm Band" from 1934 until 1937.
