Henry 'Red' Allen and his New York Orchestra
Fronting the Luis Russell Band
This classic recording was made on July 16th 1929 in New York City. The "New York Orchestra" is actually the "Luis Russell Orchestra" with Henry 'Red' Allen fronting the band.
After playing on riverboats up and down the Mississippi, New Orleans trumpeter Henry Red Allen went to Chicago in 1927 to join King Oliver's band. Around this time he recorded with Clarence Williams. After a brief return to the Crescent City, where he worked with the bands of Fate Marable and Fats Pichon, he was offered a recording contract with Victor Records and moved to New York City where he also joined the Luis Russell band and remained a featured soloist until 1932.
