Easy Come Easy Go Blues
Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards
Feat. Louis Armstrong
Recorded in Chicago on May 28th 1927 featuring Louis Armstrong cornet, Johnny Dodds clarinet, Jimmy Blythe piano, and Jimmy Bertrand washboard & wood blocks.
*"Easy Come Easy Go Blues" was composed by Jimmy Blythe and Jimmy Bertrand.
Louis Armstrong had already switched mainly to trumpet by the time this recording was made, but in spite of the fact he is featured on this Vocalion release of 1927 making an anonymous appearance playing cornet.
Throughout the 1920's Jimmy Bertrand would serve as a teacher and benefactor to many younger jazz musicians. After Lionel Hampton moved to Chicago with his family in 1916, Bertrand took the teenager under his wing and began instructing him on drums and xylophone. It was only with his help that Hampton began his career playing drums as a member of the "Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band" led by Major N. Clark Smith. Around 1927 Lionel Hampton inevitably left "The Windy City" bound for California where he would play with the "Dixieland Blues-Blowers" and make his historic recording debut with "Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders".
