Josie Miles was born in Summerville, South Carolina, but was working as an entertainer in New York City by the early 1920's. There she appeared in Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle's musical comedy "Shuffle Along." Josie made her first recordings in 1922 for the Black Swan Company, and later recorded for the Gennett, Ajax, Edison, and Banner Records labels. In 1923 she performed in New York City in James P. Johnson's revue "Runnin' Wild" at the Colonial Theater, and toured the African-American circuit with the Black Swan Troubadours.
