Melancholy
Johnny Dodds' Black Bottom Stompers
Feat. Earl Hines
Recorded in Chicago on April 22nd 1927 with Louis Armstrong trumpet, Roy Palmer trombone, Johnny Dodds clarinet, Barney Bigard tenor sax, Earl Hines piano, Bud Scott banjo, and Baby Dodds drums.
*"Melancholy" was composed by Marty Bloom and Walter Melrose.
Titled "Melancholy Blues" on Armstrong's "Hot Seven" release earlier that same month, the tune bears more than a slight similarity to Spencer Williams' 1916 hit "I Ain't Got Nobody". Lacking the Dixieland fanfare of the "Hot Seven" version the assemble here features no tuba player and a melodic treatment until the end.
