Steppin' On The Gas
Jimmy O'Bryant's Famous Original Washboard Band
Feat. Jimmy Blythe
Recorded in Chicago during February of 1925 featuring Jimmy O'Bryant clarinet, Jimmy Blythe piano, and Jasper Taylor washboard.
*"Steppin' On The Gas" is credited to Jimmy Blythe.
On this Paramount recording the two Jimmy's (Blythe and O'Bryant) take listeners for an up tempo ride. Jasper Taylor exhibits some exceptional stop-time and well blended washboard textures. Blythe provides the bass and basic chord comp to hold the performance together bursting out with an occasional fill riff when needed.
As for O'Bryant his playing is flawless with his effortless clarinet reaching even the highest notes with no trouble at all. In my opinion Jimmy O'Bryant was then one of the most versatile "gas pipe" clarinetists in Chicago.-Matt Chauvin
