In one spectacular episode of the 1960's TV show "Jazz Casual", host Ralph J. Gleason introduces Earl "Fatha" Hines who provides insightful explanation of his innovative style, influences, and how he became known as the "Father of Modern Jazz Piano".

Earl Hines developed his own expressive style of piano playing. With his fathers' permission the young pianist relocated to Pittsburgh to perform as a member of the "Symphonian Serenaders" led by baritone singer, Lois Deppe. Hines who was only seventeen at the time received free room and board at the Liederhaus nightclub and a generous fifteen dollar weekly salary. Moving to Chicago in 1925 he was soon among the most celebrated of all jazz pianists.
