You Can't Cheat A Cheater
Napoleon's Emperors
Feat. Phil Napoleon
This side was cut in New York City on May 23rd 1929 with Phil Napoleon trumpet, Tommy Dorsey trombone, Jimmy Dorsey clarinet and alto sax, Joe Venuti violin, Frank Signorelli piano, Eddie Lang guitar, Joe Tarto string bass, and Ted Napoleon (or Stan King) drums.
*"You Can't Cheat a Cheater" was written by Phil Napoleon, Frank Signorelli, and Tommy Dorsey.
As a genuine pioneer from Boston whose playing profoundly influenced many other musicians Phil Napoleon began with classical training when he was very young. By the age of 5 he was performing publicly and in the 1910s was one of the first to embrace the New Orleans form of jazz. Together with pianist Frank Signorelli he formed the group "The Original Memphis Five." It was one of the busiest bands in New York City in the 1920s, recording for most record labels often under a variety of pseudonyms.
