Wild Jazz
Jimmie Joy's St. Anthony Hotel Orchestra
Feat. Jimmie M. Maloney
Recorded in Kansas City, Missouri on May 14th 1925 featuring Rex 'Curley' Preis cornet, Jack T Brown trombone, Jimmie M Maloney clarinet & director, Gilbert O’Shaughnessy and Collis Bradt alto & tenor sax, Lynn Harrell piano, Clyde Austin banjo, Johnny W Cole bass brass, and Amos Ayala drums.
*"Wild Jazz" was composed by Baxter and Williams.
James Monte Maloney began attending the University of Texas in 1921 and organized his own five piece jazz band. One of their more prominent gigs was at Galveston's Joyland Park where management billed the band as Jimmie's Joys which Maloney adopted as his professional name.
Joy who played both the saxophone and clarinet would often surprise audiences by playing two clarinets simultaneously. The group would evolve into a favorite ballroom orchestra performing regularly at top hotels in the Midwest including the Muehlbach in Kansas City, the Peabody in Memphis, the Baker and Adolphus Hotels in Dallas, and the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio.
