"J.C. Johnson at the Keys"

This record was produced in Long Island City, New York during February of 1929 featuring J.C. Johnson piano & director, with unknown cornet, trombone, clarinet, alto sax, and banjo.

J.C. Johnson was a pianist who embarked on a successful career when moved from his native Chicago to New York during the early 1920's. Once there he began to work as a session pianist for popular singer Ethel Waters almost immediately.

Ethel would also be the first singer to commit one of his original songs to record with her June 1923 release "You Can't Do What My Last Man Did".

Although J.C. Johnson might be best remembered today for his collaborations with fellow pianist Thomas "Fats" Waller, he also led his own jazz band the "Five Hot Sparks".
