Gettin' Ready Girl
Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders
Feat. Lionel Hampton
This recording was made in Culver City, California on July 25th 1930 with George Orendorff and Earl Thompson trumpets, Lawrence Brown trombone, Paul Howard clarinet, tenor sax, & leader, Charlie Lawrence clarinet, alto sax, & arranger, Lloyd Reese clarinet & alto sax, Reginald Forsythe piano, Charlie Rousseau guitar, Skip Jackson tuba, and Lionel Hampton drums.
*"Gettin' Ready Girl" was composed by Charlie Lawrence and alternately released as "Gettin' Ready Blues".
After an orchestrated intro Paul Howard comes in on tenor saxophone followed abruptly by a trombone solo from Lawarence Brown. Next Charlie Rousseau takes his solo on strings accompanied by a tuba, piano, and reeds, then the horns take their turn leading us out.
Two members of Howard's band would go on to achieve greater fame in jazz in coming years.
Lawrence Brown would enjoy great success playing trombone with the "Duke Ellington Orchestra" and Lionel Hampton became a house hold name for his innovative work as a vibraphonist and bandleader.
