Ukulele Virtuoso
Roy Smeck
From "That Goes Double"
In this excerpt from the 1933 film "That Goes Double" Roy Smeck demonstrates, on ukulele, the talents that earned him the nickname "Wizard of the Strings" with a performance of Anton Rubinstein's "Melody in F".
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1900, Roy Smeck got his start in music performing on the vaudeville circuit.
Despite possessing a knack for stringed instrumentation his lack of ability as a singer prompted the development of impressive novelty tricks to supplement his act.
