Helen Kane
"Helen's Screen Test"
In a short screen test from 1929 Helen Kane displays the talents that made her a star.
Helen became famous almost overnight in 1927 with her appearance in the musical "A Night in Spain". The production ran from May 3rd 1927 through Nov 12th for a total of 174 performances. The following year she appeared in Oscar Hammerstein’s show "Good Boy", introducing the hit song "I Wanna Be Loved by You".
An unlikely public figure Helen Kane was five feet tall and slightly plump with a round face and big brown eyes topped by black, curly hair; her voice a baby squeak with a distinct Bronx dialect. As an overnight singing sensation she had quite a cult following, there were Helen Kane dolls and Helen Kane look-alike contests, as well as appearances on radio, in nightclubs, and on film.
