"DeForest's Sound-on-film"

This excerpt from the 1923 'talkie' "Ben Bernie and All the Lads" produced by Lee DeForest features musicians including Ben Bernie violin & leader, Jack Pettis saxophone, and Oscar Levant piano.

*"Craving" was composed by Ben Bernie, Philip Charig, Kenneth Casey, and William Lewis.

Using his revolutionary 'Phonofilm' process film-maker Lee DeForest would capture a full ten minuets of Ben Bernie's Orchestra performing at the Hotel Roosevelt in New York.

Ben Bernie's career as a performer began in Vaudeville in 1912 billed as "The Fiddle Up Boys" teamed up with fellow violinist Charles Klass. Despite his virtuoso instrumental abilities Bernie had little success until 1922 when he joined his first orchestra and set out to organize his own shortly there-after.
