Willow Tree
Louisiana Sugar Babes
Feat. James P. Johnson
Recorded in Camden, New Jersey on March 27th 1928 by the "Louisiana Sugar Babes" featuring James P. Johnson piano, Fats Waller church organ, Jabbo Smith cornet, and Garvin Bushell clarinet & alto sax.
*"Willow Tree" was composed by Andy Razaf and Fats Waller.
Beginning softly with the piano flurry of James P. Johnson, Fats Waller comes in on the church's organ at the start of the second minute. First it's Bushell who makes his presences known with mournful alto cries before Jabbo brings it back to jazz with his blue cornet.
A duet between Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, a hot clarinet solo from Garvin Bushell, and then briefly back to Waller and Johnson for the grande finish.
This amazing session really was recorded in an old church turned into a recording studio by the Victor Company.
-(Hey, that explains these excellent acoustics !)
