After spending years touring in vaudeville Ethel Waters evetually settled in Harlem, New York in 1919. Following her arrival she picked up her first steady gig at a black owned club called Edmond's Cellar and later that year she got a supporting role in the blackface comedy "Hello 1919".
On March 22nd 1921 Ethel Waters became the fifth African American blues singer to make records when she recorded her very first two sides for the tiny Cardinal label. Then, soon after making her recording debut Ethel joined the newly formed Black Swan label and on subsequent records Fletcher Henderson would often be her accompanist.
