Beau Koo Jack (Unissued)
Earl Hines & His Orchestra
Feat. Cecil Irwin
Recorded in Chicago on February 15th 1929 featuring Shirley Clay and George Mitchell cornets, William Franklin trombone, Lester Boone clarinet, alto, & baritone sax, Toby Turner clarinet & alto sax, Cecil Irwin clarinet, alto, & tenor sax, Earl Hines piano & leader, Claude Roberts banjo, unknown guitar, Hayes Alvis tuba, and Benny Washington drums.
*"Beau Koo Jack" was composed by Alex Hill, Louis Armstrog, and Walter Melrose.
Arranged by the tunes' co-author Alex Hill this alternate unissued take provides a significant variety to those listeners who have never heard it. In many ways the tune on this record is more straightforward than those sides released, lacking many of the subtleties of the finalized perfected orchestration. Perhaps not quite well enough rehearsed Cecil Irwin's clarinet solo comes on a bit strong, but this is not altogether a bad thing. -Matt Chauvin
