Well known for his muted cornet Freddie Keppard would often use it to produced a laughing effect.

Suspicious by nature he would play with a handkerchief covering his hand so that others would not be able to copy his fingerings.

(This is the finest recorded example of Freddie Keppard's famous muted laughing cornet.)
