Recorded in New York City on January 19th 1928 featuring Louis Metcalf and Bubber Miley trumpets, Joe Nanton trombone, Barney Bigard clarinet & tenor sax, Harry Carney clarinet, alto, & baritone sax, Duke Ellington piano, director, & arranger, Fred Guy banjo, Otto Hardwicke bass sax, Wellman Braud string bass, and Sonny Greer drums.

"The Washingtonians" was the name originally used by the "Duke Ellington Orchestra". But prior to the voting-out and firing of their original bandleader, banjo player Elmer Snowden, they were billed as the "Washington Black Sox Orchestra". Snowden's abrupt ejection is said to have been over unpaid wadges he reportedly owed to the band. No matter the reason, when Snowden left and Ellington assumed compete control of the band it set into motion a chain of circumstances just right for the creation of one of the biggest driving forces in jazz of the 20th Century.
