Down in the Mouth Blues
The Texas Blues Destroyers
Feat. Bubber Miley
This record was made in New York City during September or October of 1924 with Bubber Miley cornet, accompanied by Alvin Ray on reed organ.
*"Down in the Mouth Blues" was composed by James 'Bubber' Miley and Arthur Ray.
In contrast to the flip side recorded by "The Texas Blues Destroyers" this number is far more subdued but the slower tempo allows for great insight to Miley's horn technique. His six year stay with Ellington was relatively short but his muted trumpet style would live on in the band adopted by his predecessor Cootie Williams and later Ray Nance.
