During the early 1930's Jack Teagarden was based in Chicago, for a time playing in the band of Wingy Manone and at the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. He sought financial security during 'The Great Depression' by signing an exclusive contract with the "Paul Whiteman Orchestra" from 1933 through 1938. Though it provided him with a steady gig his time with Whiteman also prevented him from playing an active part in the many musical advances of the mid-1930's swing era.
