This record as produced in Chicago on October 24th 1929 featuring Bennie Moten director, Ed Lewis and Booker Washington cornets, Thamon Hayes trombone, Eddie Durham guitar & arranger, Harlan Leonard clarinet, soprano, & alto sax, Jack Washington clarinet, alto, & baritone sax, Woody Walder clarinet & tenor sax, Count Basie piano, Buster Moten piano-accordion, Leroy Berry banjo, Vernon Page bass brass, and Willie McWashington drums.
*"New Vine Street Blues" was composed by Bennie Moten and William Basie.
Eddie Durham has a fairly long guitar solo (24 bars). This is probably a head chart, with only one trumpet, one trombone (Hayes) and two reeds participating. E.D.'s guitar solo stands out here, with his phrases in bar 14 and especially bar 16 being very "outside" the tonality. I'm not sure if bar 16 is a "mistake", but it certainly is wild. According to Martin Williams: "It ("New Vine Street Blues") is an altogether remarkable performance, much less over-arranged and much more emotionally cohesive than most of the Moten records from this period." If it was a head chart, that explains why it isn't over-arranged! -Daniel Weinstein
