Ben Bernie & All The Lads
"DeForest's Sound-on-film"
This is an excerpt from "Ben Bernie & All The Lads" an early sound film by Lee DeForest produced in 1923.
Ben Bernie violin & leader, is featured at the Hotel Roosevelt in New York performing his most popular number along with his Orchestra including members: Jack Pettis saxophone, and Oscar Levant piano.
*"Sweet Georgia Brown" was composed by Ben Bernie and Maceo Pinkard, with lyrics by Kenneth Casey.
It is the song for which Ben Bernie is best remembered today.
This clip contains the first sax solo ever captured on film, played by the legendary Jack Pettis. Pettis and Bernie went on to composed a number of other songs together from 1925 until the late '20's when, as an established saxophone star, Jack Pettis inevitably left the group to strike out on his own.
